Types of Spine Tumors
Tumors of the spine are classified based on their location. Extramedullary tumors develop along the outside of the spinal cord, and in most cases, this type of spinal tumor is malignant (non-cancerous).
Tumors that originate inside the cells of the spinal cord itself are known as Intramedullary tumors - these tumors are often malignant.
Left untreated, both cancerous and non-cancerous spine tumors can compress the nerves surrounding the spinal cord as well as the cord itself; this can result in permanent nerve damage and a significant loss of function.
Common Symptoms of Spine Tumors
The frequency and severity of symptoms caused by a spinal tumor vary between each patient, and factors such as the type of tumor, location, and your overall health and wellness impact your symptoms.
Common symptoms that are related to spine tumors include:
- Back pain that can radiate out to your feet and/or hands
- Uncomfortable tingling and nerve pain in your legs and feet
- Trouble walking
- Urinary and/or fecal incontinence
- Reduced sensitivity to stimulus like cold, heat, and pain
- Muscle weakness in different parts of your body
Generally speaking, cancerous tumors progress relatively quickly, while non-cancerous tumors can be slow to develop - this can impact the severity, and frequency of symptoms.
